Phonics Jargon Buster for Parents

Phoneme, grapheme, digraph, blending… phonics comes with quite a few words you may not have come across before.

If your child has started learning phonics and you’ve heard a term you don’t understand, use the A–Z below to find it. Each phonics term is explained in plain English, with a simple example to show you what it means and why it matters when your child is learning to read.

A

In plain English:
Two or more consonant sounds next to each other in a word, where you can still hear each sound separately.

Show me:

You can hear both s and t at the beginning. They sit next to each other, but neither sound disappears.

Another example:

frog → f — r — o — g

You can hear both f and r.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Words like stop and frog can be harder to blend because there are more separate sounds for your child to hold onto and put together. Knowing that every sound still needs to be heard helps explain why children sometimes miss a sound and read stop as top, for example.

In plain English:
When words begin with the same sound.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Alliteration helps children start noticing the sound at the beginning of spoken words. That’s useful in phonics because they’ll eventually need to identify those sounds and connect them to the letters that represent them.

In plain English:
Blending means putting separate sounds together to hear the whole word.

Show me:

Say the sounds separately, then bring them together:

c — a — t → cat

That’s blending.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Knowing what sounds letters represent isn’t enough on its own. When your child sees cat, they need to turn the letters into sounds and then blend those sounds together to recognise the word. Blending is what turns their letter sounds knowledge into actual reading.

In plain English:
Making sounds using your body — for example, clapping, stomping, tapping your knees or clicking your fingers.

Show me:

Make the pattern and ask your child to listen and copy it.

You could then change it:

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Body percussion is one of the ways young children can practise paying attention to sound — listening carefully, remembering what they heard and noticing differences and patterns. Early phonics activities develop this attention to sound before increasingly focusing attention on the sounds in spoken words.

In plain English:
A word that includes a sound-and-letter relationship that doesn’t follow the patterns your child would normally expect or has been taught so far.

Your child may know some of the letters and sounds in this word from the phonics they’ve currently been taught, but the ai doesn’t represent the sound they might expect from words such as rain.

It’s this unusual part about the spelling that makes it an exception word.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
English has lots of regular patterns, which is why phonics is so useful, but it isn’t perfectly predictable.

Child learn to spot the unusual part of some common words as well as using the phonics they already know.

In plain English:
A word made from a consonant sound, followed by a vowel sound, followed by another consonant sound. CVC simply stands for consonant–vowel–consonant.

Each follows the same simple three-sound pattern.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
CVC words are useful when children are learning to blend because they provide a simple structure for practising the process:

see the letters → say the sounds → blend them → hear the word

That’s why words such as sat, pin, dog and cup appear so often in early phonics.

D

In plain English:
A book designed so that your child can read most of the words using the phonics they have already been taught.

Show me:
Imagine your child has learned the sounds needed to read:

s — a — t → sat

A decodable book gives them opportunities to meet words such as sat that use the sound-and-letter connections they already know, rather than filling the book with spelling patterns they haven’t learned yet.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Decodable books give your child the chance to practise reading words for themselves. Instead of having to guess from a picture or wait for you to tell them what a word says, they can use the phonics they’ve learned to work it out.

In plain English:
Decoding means working out what a written word says.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Decoding gives your child a way to tackle written words for themselves. Instead of having to remember every word they’ve ever seen, they can use what they know about sounds and letters to work out unfamiliar words too.

In plain English:
Two letters that work together to represent one sound.

The s and h are two letters, but together sh represents one sound.

So ship has:

4 letters
but
3 sounds: sh — i — p

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
When your child sees sh in a word, they’ll need to remember that the two letters are working together to make one sound. Trying to give s and h separate sounds would make words such as ship, shop and fish much harder to work out.

In plain English:
The everyday sounds children hear in the world around them.

Show me:
Instead of showing your child what made the sound, let them listen first:

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Environmental sound activities encourage young children to stop and pay attention to what they’re hearing — noticing, comparing and remembering sounds. As early phonics develops, that attention is increasingly turned towards spoken language and the sounds inside words.

G

In plain English:
A grapheme is the letter or group of letters we use to represent a sound in writing.

Show me:

We can hear this sound:

and represent it in writing with:

Here, s is the grapheme.

But a grapheme can contain more than one letter.

The sound /sh/ can be represented by:

sh

Two letters, but together they’re representing one sound.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
When your child reads with phonics, they look at written letters and letter groups and learn which sounds they represent. Those written representations are what teachers mean when they talk about graphemes.

In plain English:
A GPC is the connection between a sound and the letter or letters used to represent it.

GPC stands for grapheme-phoneme correspondence.

That’s a GPC.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
These sound-and-letter connections are what make phonics work.

When your child sees m in map, knowing its connection with the /m/ sound gives them one of the sounds they need to work out the word.

These connections are at the heart of phonics. When your child looks at a written word, knowing the GPCs allows the letters on the page to tell them which sounds to say.

You don’t need to start using the term GPC at home. It’s useful to understand because you may hear teachers or phonics resources use it.

H

In plain English:
A word that appears very often in the things we read and write.

Show me:
Words such as:

the · and · is · it

appear again and again in books and everyday writing.

That’s all high frequency means: we encounter the word frequently.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Because your child will meet these words so often, becoming able to read them quickly will eventually help their reading become smoother and more fluent.

Importantly, high-frequency doesn’t mean “a word that can’t be sounded out.” Some high-frequency words are completely decodable with the phonics a child knows; others may contain a part they haven’t learned yet.

In plain English:
Sounds made by musical instruments that children can listen to, compare, copy and experiment with.

These activities aren’t teaching children to read words yet. They’re giving young children playful opportunities to listen carefully, remember sounds and notice differences and patterns. Early phonics gradually brings that attention to sound closer to spoken language.

In plain English:
The name we use when talking about a letter of the alphabet.

Its letter name is “em”.

But when your child reads map, they don’t say:

em — ay — pee

They need the sounds represented by those letters:

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Letter names are useful to know, but they aren’t the same as the sounds children need for blending. Understanding the difference helps make sense of why early phonics often focuses so much on the sounds letters can represent, rather than only learning the alphabet names.

When your child sees a written word, the letters need to give them sounds they can actually blend. Knowing the sounds letters can represent is what allows:

In plain English:
Hearing separate spoken sounds and putting them together to work out the word — without needing to see any letters.

Don’t show your child a written word. Simply say:

When your child eventually sees c a t, the letters will help them find the sounds — but they still need to be able to put those sounds together and hear cat.

Oral blending lets them practise that part of the reading process using sound alone.

Hearing a whole spoken word and breaking it into the individual sounds inside it — without needing to see the word written down.

It helps children discover something important about spoken language: the words they already say are made from smaller sounds.

That awareness supports phonics and becomes particularly useful for spelling, when children need to hear the sounds in a word before deciding how to represent them with letters.

P

In plain English:
A phoneme is one individual sound in a spoken word.

Show me:
Listen to:

Now listen as we separate the sounds:

You can hear three individual sounds, so dog has three phonemes.

Now try:

Fish has four letters, but still only three phonemes, because sh represents one sound.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Phonics teaches your child how these sounds can be represented in writing. When they read, they use the letters they see to find those sounds and blend them back together into a word.

So when a teacher talks about a phoneme, they’re simply talking about one of the sounds your child is learning to hear and use.

In plain English:
Being able to notice and work with the individual sounds inside spoken words.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Phonics connects written letters to the sounds in spoken words. If your child can notice and work with those sounds, they have something meaningful to connect the letters to when they begin reading and spelling.

Being able to notice and play with the sound patterns in spoken language — including whole words, rhyme, syllables and individual sounds.

These are all different ways of paying attention to how spoken language sounds, rather than only what the words mean.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Children naturally listen to language for meaning. Learning to read also requires them to start noticing how spoken words are put together from sounds. Phonological awareness is the broader sound awareness that supports that shift.

In plain English:
Phonics teaches children how the sounds in spoken words connect to the letters they see on the page — and how to use those connections to read words.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Your child is going to meet thousands of written words. They can’t wait for somebody to tell them what every new word says.

Phonics gives them a way to use the letters on the page to work words out for themselves.

In plain English:
Phonics phases are a way of organising phonics learning so that children’s knowledge and skills build gradually over time.

Show me:
Your child isn’t expected to learn every sound-and-letter connection in English at once.

Very broadly, their experience develops from things such as:

listening and playing with sounds

learning that letters represent speech sounds

blending sounds to read words

learning more sound-and-letter patterns

reading increasingly varied words

The phases help organise that learning into manageable stages.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
If your child’s school mentions Phase 1, Phase 2 or Phase 3, knowing what the phases are helps you understand roughly what kind of phonics knowledge and skills they’re currently developing — and therefore what sort of support is appropriate at home.

Most UK schools (particularly in England) follow structured phonics programmes, many based on adapted fully structured versions of the 2007 Letters and Sounds* framework, usually divided into phases similar to the following:

*no longer in use as a standalone framework.

As UK schools use different phonics programmes, the names, order and timing of these stages/phases can vary.

Early listening and sound activities may often be described as “Phase 1 phonics”. That’s because Phase 1 was the name given to these early activities in the original Letters and Sounds framework. Unlike the phonics children do later, Phase 1 doesn’t mainly focus on matching written letters to sounds. Instead, it develops children’s listening, speaking and awareness of sounds through play.

In plain English:
A pure sound is a speech sound said cleanly, without adding any additional sounds after it.

Show me:

The first version keeps the sound clean.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Adding additional sounds to the ‘pure sound’ can make blending harder.

If your child is trying to turn the sounds in map into the word map. If the sounds become something more like:

muh — a — puh

they now have extra sounds that may make the word harder to hear.

Using clean sounds makes it easier to hear the word as the sounds are blended together.

R

In plain English:
Words rhyme when the end of the words sound the same.

Show me:

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Rhyme encourages children to listen to how words sound, not just what they mean. Noticing similarities and differences in spoken words is part of the broader sound awareness that supports early phonics.

In plain English:
Segmenting means breaking a spoken word into the individual sounds you can hear inside it.

Show me:
Start with the whole word:

fish

Listen for its sounds:

That’s segmenting.

Blending goes the other way:

f — i — sh → fish

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Segmenting helps your child become aware of the individual sounds that make up words. It’s especially important for spelling, because before your child can decide which letters to write, they need to work out which sounds they can hear in the word.

In plain English:
Marks placed underneath a written word to show the sounds a child needs to identify before blending the word.

Show me:
For cat, there are three separate sounds, so you might see a dot underneath each letter:

But in ship, sh represents one sound, so those two letters would be marked together rather than treated as two separate sounds:

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Sound buttons make the sound structure of a written word visible. They can help your child see which letters represent separate sounds and which letters are working together before they blend the sounds into the word.

In plain English:
It means looking at a written word, working out the sounds represented by its letters, then putting those sounds together to find the word.

Sounding out gives your child something useful to do when they meet a word they don’t immediately recognise.

Instead of guessing from the picture or waiting for you to tell them the word, they can use the phonics they know to have a go at working it out.

The a and final e work together as part of the spelling of the vowel sound in cake, even though the k sits between them:

You’ll see the same kind of pattern in:

You may remember something similar being called “magic e” at school.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
When your child meets words such as cake or time, they need to recognise the whole spelling pattern rather than treating every letter as an unrelated sound.

Recognising split digraphs helps them choose the appropriate vowel sound and successfully work out the word.

In plain English:
A syllable is one beat or spoken chunk within a word.

Show me:
Say each word naturally and clap its beats:

cat 👏 — 1 syllable

pic-nic 👏 👏 — 2 syllables

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
As children begin meeting longer words, noticing syllables can help them deal with the word in smaller, more manageable parts rather than trying to tackle the whole thing at once.

In plain English:
It’s the approach used in England to teach phonics in a planned order, with children learning sound-and-letter connections and using them to blend words.

There are two ideas hidden inside the name:

Systematic = phonics is taught in a planned sequence.

Synthetic = children put, or synthesise, separate sounds together to make a word.

Show me:
A child learns sound-and-letter connections such as:

New sound-and-letter knowledge is introduced systematically so that what children can read gradually grows.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
You may see systematic synthetic phonics, or SSP, mentioned by your child’s school or phonics programme. It isn’t a separate skill your child has to learn — it’s the name for the structured approach being used to teach them phonics.

In plain English:
A word containing a part that your child can’t yet read straightforwardly using the phonics they have been taught.

A child may be able to use some of their phonics knowledge, but part of the word doesn’t match the sound-and-letter patterns they would currently expect.

That part is tricky for them at this stage.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Children meet some useful, common words before they’ve learned all the sound-and-letter knowledge needed to read every part straightforwardly.

The important point is that “tricky” doesn’t mean “forget phonics and memorise the whole word as a picture.” Children can use the phonics they know and learn what is unusual about the part that is currently tricky.

When your child sees igh, they need to recognise those three letters as a group representing one sound. If they try to give i, g and h separate sounds, words such as night, light and high won’t make sense when they try to blend them.

You can change the sound too: long or short, loud or quiet, high or low.

Why does this matter for my child’s reading?
Voice-sound play brings children’s attention directly to sounds they can make with their own voices. They can listen, copy, compare and experiment with sounds — bringing early listening activities closer to the speech sounds they’ll later connect with letters in phonics.
