Tricky Words and Sight Words

Tricky words are common words taught in UK phonics that cannot always be sounded out using normal blending rules, such as the, said, and was. Children are taught to recognise these words quickly so they can read sentences more smoothly and confidently.

However, it’s important to know that not all “sight words” need to be memorised. While some words are truly tricky, many can be sounded out once children know their phonics. Understanding the difference helps children become stronger, more confident readers.

This short video explains how tricky words work and why some can still be decoded using phonics.

These simple, structured worksheet activities are ideal for Reception and Key Stage 1 children, and will help provide extra support with common exception/tricky words.
